who are the watsons?
We are a 30-something married couple who decided to leave behind our home, careers and comfortable Silicon Valley lifestyle to try a new course. Join us as we travel the world to learn about other cultures, lifestyles and ways to generate income beyond the traditional 9-5.

Homeward bound

Our last hurrah for now: On the ferry to Koh Chang

The luster of travel has faded. While we were in New Zealand, one of Brian’s friends said our travel plan sounded like logistics on steroids. It turns out he was absolutely right.

Usually when we take short trips, I prepare a suggested itinerary and a map with cool places to see, eat and hang out, but on this trip, the added complications of ongoing travel arrangements and finding a new place to live every six weeks or so undermined that discipline. Added to that, since we left New Zealand for Australia, we’ve dealt with a series of complications that have made me long for the small comforts of home: our lovely Tempurpedic bed, Internet that works, personal mementos and more.

No one ever said long-term travel was easy. If you’ve wondered, it’s nothing like vacationing. It’s more like living a nomadic existence, something for which Brian and I quickly learned we aren’t ideal candidates. Then there is our emotional distance from home. We miss friends and family, and due to our persnickety Internet, we often go long periods without feeling “connected.” It was wonderful to see my mom and other family members over the holidays in Sydney, but I have felt more alone than ever since we said goodbye.

So, we’ve decided to return to the States for a while. We’re not sure exactly what that means for Watsons Unleashed, but the blog was never meant to be purely travel focused. It is about living our dreams, and travel isn’t doing that for us right now. In fact, it’s actively hindering our work on launching our new businesses, what with the on again/off again Internet access and the distance from our personal and business contacts.

For those of you who haven’t heard, we’re flying back to the States on March 9th. We’ll be visiting my family in Jacksonville, Florida for a while, probably several months, and then we’ll decide what’s next. Maybe we’ll see you there.

Cheers,

  • Sher

    Both of you travel safe!

    Thanks, Sherry!

Dear Kate, safe travels home. It’s great that you can feel this way just as you felt the way you did when you left home for the adventures of the road. It shows you are both human and you are following your heart and not some itinerary written out there for what you are meant to do. I think it will be a great change of pace and I hope you enjoy the warm embrace of family and friends when you return. All the best and we look forward to your future updates here!

Thanks, Farnoosh. We’re getting re-settled into American living. It’s an interesting process that I may blog about sometime. Being closer to family has been great though!
